When you join our Legal Department as a Commercial Solicitor, you’ll become part of one of the UK’s largest in-house teams. Working across all Co-operative Group businesses, you’ll provide an efficient value enhancing legal support service (both advisory and preparation of transaction/contract documents) to the Group’s Senior Management community. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • To consistently provide impartial, accessible, commercially! oriented legal advice (both written and verbal) in relation t! o a variety of commercial transactions affecting the entire spectrum of the Society’s conglomerate business interests, to predominantly Senior Managers and the Executive, with the standard of provision to be credibly benchmark-able against the leading law firms (including negotiation and agreement of contracts, where appropriate)
  • To deputise for line manager, as and when required, to preserve the continuity of advice and support to the Society’s Senior Management and Executive community (including the Group Counsel) in relation to transactions, proposals and disputes
  • To draft lengthy, complex and, often, heavily negotiated transaction documents frequently under the pressure of time to ensure commercial objectives are effectively converted to enforceable contractual rights, and transaction risk is contained at acceptable (or lower) levels and, in doing so, co-ordinating as a project manager the inputs of multi-disciplinary internal stakeholders/speciali! sts (e.g. business managers, accountants, surveyors, tax and pension professionals etc) into those documents
  • To demonstrate a clear understanding of business/function objectives and the relevant law/legal environment to facilitate proactive provision to the Society’s Senior Management community of:
(A) Key legal developments

(B) Changes in market practice

(C) Recommendations as to changes in commercial behaviour and practice that should be adopted universally/in discrete business areas if legal risk is not to be increased materially

  • To assess with accuracy the time and personal resources/skills burden imposed by prevailing and known imminent workload and internal client demands so that (i) in/outsourcing decisions/recommendations are made in a timely and effective fashion and (ii) reasonable business expectations as to service delivery are consistently met or exceeded
KEY EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
  • Solicitor
  • Specialist knowledge, capability and ! experience in relevant area of law, but also the ability to think broadly across all specialist areas within Legal Services
  • A recognised specialist advising and negotiating in relation to a wide variety of complex matters
  • Committed to the continuous improvement of systems and processes in a technically challenging area of the law
  • Ability to contribute constructively as a member of and, on occasions, as the leader of project teams relative to highly technical and, in certain cases, high profile and high value matters
  • A well developed sense of strategic/commercial drivers affecting the majority of transactions/disputes encountered
  • Articulate and persuasive communication skills; an ability to adapt communication style whilst retaining professionalism and effectiveness; a confident, but non-confrontational, challenger of “received wisdom”; the capacity to preserve dispassionate perspective in relation to
(i) the facts/! issues in question and

(ii) what can realistically be achieved relative to the legal content in the available time, without in either case being, or being perceived as being, a barrier to the business accomplishing its goals
