Applications are invited for a 3.5 year PhD studentship in the ! Schools of Chemistry and Medicine at the University of Manchester. This studentship offers an exciting opportunity to work at the interface between organic electronics and clinical medicine in collaboration with Cambridge Display Technology ( www.cdtltd.co.uk ), the leading developer of technologies based on polymeric light emitting diodes. It is jointly supervised by Professor M.L. Turner and Dr M. Webb at the University of Manchester and will examine the use of Organic Field Effect Transistors (OFETs) as effective signal transducers for the detection of biomarkers of disease. It will involve the design, fabrication and testing of OFET devices that demonstrate sensitive and selective detection of biomarkers of disease.

Candidates should have a first or upper-second class honours degree in Chemistry, Physics or Electronic Engineering and an enthusiastic approach to interdisciplinary research. An understanding of the principles of operation of organic electronic dev! ices is essential, whilst knowledge of protein chemistry would! be advantageous.

Industrially funded and will cover tuition fees and a stipend of 13,726 for the 2013/14.The position is available to UK and EU nationals only and is available immediately.
