Signalling Principles Design Engineer is responsible for the production of detailed signalling designs and calculations within an implementation project, signalling renewals or signalling amendments resultant from other Railway asset renewals. Mentor junior designers and review designs produced by them under your mentorship. The role is part of the Signalling Design team, working on an extremely wide variety of projects both in the UK and overseas. Our projects also involve a diverse range of technologies, Mechanical/Electro-mechanical, RRI, Geographical interlocking, CBI and ETCS.
The Signalling team is part of the North West and Yorkshire Rail team, which comprises over 40 lively and enthusiastic engineers, designers and technicians based mainly in the Manchester and York offices, which hold approximately 125 and 10 permanent staff respectively. There is scope to grow the York office up to 30 and this! input would form part of that process. These offices operate ! across several Arup multidisciplinary businesses and work closely with other large regional offices in Liverpool, Leeds and Sheffield. Within the group, we have a wealth of experience of railway design, construction, installation and commissioning throughout the UK and Overseas.
Our Rail business is unique: whereas many of our competitors and contractors focus on narrow âfunctional silosâ or specific disciplines such as track and power, today we can provide just about every service that a client in the Rail sector might want. Not only do we provide it, but do so in a joined up, integrated and holistic form that provides added value to our clients. Our UK, Middle East and Africa (UKMEA) Region Rail business turnover is ~£100m: nearly half of our Global Rail Turnover and c10% of Arup Global Turnover.
Role
- Produce detailed principles signalling design as directed by the design management.
- Assist the signalling design management wi! th planning, project programmes and associated time and resource estimates and skills requirements.
- Provide technical guidance for the production of detailed signalling design. Assist with reviewing progress of junior staff.
- Able to work under nominal supervision for the majority of the work.
- Make sure that satisfactory resolutions of technical queries and project anomalies are achieved.
- Implement the design scope, certifying that the designers working under your guidance understand the project requirements.
- Assist with risk assessments and analysis using the appropriate tools and methods required.
- Reports to team leader, project manager, and ultimately the Group leader.
- Working as part of a team comprising designers, engineers and technicians, or leading a number of Assistant Signalling Designers or Signalling Designers and more junior technical staff with signalling design input to smaller signalling and railw! ay projects.
Qualifications and exp! erience:
- Experience in an Engineering Design role where your specialist knowledge and engineering judgement was paramount to success.
- Solid influencing skills combined with a calm, logical, persuasive and inclusive approach to leading.
- Knowledge of signalling design, signalling principles and UK Mainline Signalling principles and technologies (e.g. GRIP 1-5/7).
- Desire to obtain relevant signalling design accreditations would be viewed favourably.
- Likely to be educated to hold a HNE or appropriate higher qualification.
- IRSE Licence Signalling Principles Designer category 1.1.550 and ideally Signalling design verifier 1.1.160.
- Ideally an IRSE associate member and incorporated engineer.
- Substantial hands-on experience of production of outline and detailed signalling designs and calculations.
- Familiar with use of signalling software packages.
- Good underpinning knowledge of design p! rinciples, standards, components and fabrication.
- Experience of signalling construction methods & installation.
- Good knowledge of RRI or Mechanical or SSI systems (ideally all 3), ideally with additional design knowledge of other systems or Data prep would be advantage.
