A full-time Research Associate position is available for an outstanding and ambitious scientist/engineer, to! undertake work in the field of materialscharacterisationand performance. The project is funded by BP with the aim of undertaking research into the development of hydrogen-resistant steels for the oil & gas sector. More specifically the project will assess the role of steel metallurgy and welding on the corrosionbehaviourand resistance to hydrogen uptake of the steels developed.
You should hold or have submitted a PhD (or equivalent experience) in materials science/engineering, mechanical engineering or corrosion science/engineering. The project will require excellent experimentation skills and methods such as standard AC/DC electrochemical corrosion testing and hydrogen permeation studies. Desirable skills include scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and or x-ray tomography and diffraction techniques, all of which will be exploited during the project. A good understanding of corrosion characterisation techniques is therefore essential along with an understand! ing of ferrous metallurgy. An awareness of welding methods and! influence of welding on microstructural changes would be an advantage. You should be capable of working under your own initiative and, as this project is funded by industry and will be carried out between The University of Manchester, Cambridge and BP. This will also require excellent communication,organisationaland collaboration skills. The ability to support the supervision of PhD and MSc students is also a requirement of the position.
